Full disclosure nothing in this entry brings me pleasure. There use to be a time where White Supremacist, White Nationalism, and the KKK were chased to the deep shadows. Where these radical and extreme views caused embarrassment and shame. Where they dared not to have their faces and identities known.
and then came Donald J Trump
No Mr “President” there are not very fine people on both sides, to my knowledge there is zero decency in pissed off white males filling the mad-bowl carrying tiki torches and chanting “Jews will not replace us” or using Isis techniques to kill Ms Heather Heyer and injure dozens of Americans by driving a car in to a crowd.
”very fine people on both sides” Donald Trump
Only to then abuse the power of his office by shuttering (one can only assume at the behest of Seb Gorka’s wife, “Dr Gorka” and other known white nationalist in his administration): “Countering Violent Extremism,” but to then rebrand that DHS program as the “Countering Islamic Extremism” or “Countering Radical Islamic Extremism,” oh you think I’m hyperventilating about disinformation?
This DHS link will take you to the now archived CVE program. In 2016 Congress appropriated $10million in funds allowing DHS to issue those funds via a grant process.
DHS and CVE Grants circa 2016
What some of you may not know is each agency tends to create a strategic plan, it is typically a forward facing “plan” that is forward looking for multiple years. This DHS CVE Grant link will take you to the complete grant process and accompanying remittances for those seeking grants.
As you can see under the “revised” Trump DHS there is no longer any emphasis on home grown terrorism beyond a two word acknowledgement of domestic terrorist or addressing the growing domestic terrorist groups. These are not my opinions these are facts that I will lay out below:
Violent extremist threats come from a range of groups and individuals, including domestic terrorists and homegrown violent extremists in the United States, as well as international terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and ISIL. Lone offenders or small groups may be radicalized to commit violence at home or attempt to travel overseas to become foreign fighters. The use of the Internet and social media to recruit and radicalize individuals to violence means that conventional approaches are unlikely to identify and disrupt all terrorist plots.
I feel compelled to say this, I consider myself a Catholic. Growing up our Church shared property with a neighboring Synagogue. In times of remembrance our two Religious Communities fellowshipped with each other. It didn’t matter what “God” we prayed to, we were one community and we actually broke bread with each other. I know that I was lucky enough to have parents, faith leaders and educators that all fostered this kind of inclusiveness, that it did not matter what the color of your skin was, that we are all one.
Have we really forgotten what our Pledge Of Allegiance states?
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
And yes these are the same values I’m more than happy to teach my children. By taking them to interfaith events, like serving hot meals to homeless Americans. Like adopting an under privilege family throughout the year (just not during the holidays) that we are our bothers and sisters keepers. That we aren’t giving a hand out, but a hand up to a person/family that is in need. Yes we should off the bat acknowledge that every religion has a subsect that is radical and extreme.
The concern I have is are all Christians equated to the WestBoro Church? Nope. Then why are we willing to equate all Muslims with Isis or other ant-Muslim Tropes. Nearly every single Muslim I know (and I happen to personally know a lot) are horrified by what terror groups like Isis are doing in the name of their religion. Again the vast majority of Muslims I know are kind, generous and decent human beings. Yet we seem to have become desensitized to the rage and hate flowing from Trump’s mouth and his twitter account.
Lest we forget that nearly two years ago Trump said this and offered ZERO proof, facts or evidence to support his outrageous position. Not once has Trump been held accountable for his disgusting lies about General Pershing, his bullshit racist tropes about our first duly elected African American president..
Trump: “Islam Hates Us”
A true sign of an actual leader is their ability to bring people together. That a real leader doesn’t widen the divide. That leadership means you hold yourself to a standard where children look up to you as a role model. Being a true leader can be lonely, that it may take others longer to agree with your position. I’d argue that Trump is a leader of hate and division. That he is too much of a coward to offer a full throated repudiation of the Alt-Right, White Nationalist, White Supremacist, because the reality is those people are part of Trump’s base.
If you think we will ever see a forceful and total repudiation of the radical and extreme views from Trump, I have some bad news for you, we won’t. Yes I’m saying Trump is incapable of being a positive leader and he is clearly uncomfortable with upsetting a subsection of his base.
Total and Complete Ban on Muslims
So let’s just rip the bandaid off, TRUMP IS A RACIST, pure and simple.
There I said it and I’m not the least bit sorry, it’s the TRUTH. Trump traffics in “others” and amplifies the “Us vs Them” cancerous narrative. Trump has zero morals, zero conscious, zero integrity, and sadly has zero leadership. Trump is a race baiting fear mongering addict, who take immense pleasure in tormenting people.
The question is why are those in the GOP utterly silent? No really why are they not speaking the truth that the leader of their party has utterly hijacked the once vaunted Grand Ol’ Party...could it be that secretly the GOP LURVES what Trump is saying? That they adore Trump because he’s oh so “brave” for saying what many in the Party gave wanted to say for years but were simply too scared to “go there” or is the tired excuse of “well I’m up for re-election and I scared of Trump’s twitter screeds”...does it really matter?
I would argue that yes of course it matters. Every day that Donald Trump is in Office is yet another day where Mr ‘I alone can fix it” takes a jack hammer to the very foundation of TRUE AMERICAN ideals. Our real values. Our global leadership. Our once respected moral authority.
I suppose you could say that Trump’s true intent and motive is to beat us into submission and embrace his dysmorphic image that he sees as:
“Make America Great Again”.
Newsflash, America has always been great. The very fabric that allowed your ancestors (and mine) to emigrate to America. Have we really forgotten what’s on our Statue of Liberty:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
The unsettling fact is the very fabric of what makes America great, it is being torn and torched by a pathological lair and narcissistic sociopath. Trump is a man who can not formulate a coherent sentence, much less draft complex public policy.
Donald Trump isn’t the cause of what happening in our Country and around the world, he is merely the messenger and he certainly not a messiah. In the past I have jokingly said that Trump is a cult leader, well let me tell you I’m no longer joking, Trump is in fact a cult leader to the White Supremacist, White Nationalist and Alt Right. To his followers, Trump is their GOD. And because I actually believe that Trump has an addictive personality, he like any junkie looking for a fix goes back to his supporters because they offer Trump the “legitimacy” he so desperately craves.
This link will take you to Trump’s Twitter Archive, of the 21 times he’s invoked the word “animals”
This link will take you to the instances where Trump tweeted about “invade”
This link will take you to the 66 separate tweets where he put right attacks Islam and falsely accuses all Muslims as being radical terrorist, it’s disgusting and disgraceful but then again so is Trump in every sense of the word. He is a loathsome human being.
This link will take you to Trump’s Twitter Archive of the 117 Terrorist tweets. This little man actually lied about Terrorist in New Jersey Celebrating as the Twin Towers fell and the Pentagon’s E-ring fell. There was no such celebration. It was a lie but Trump kept repeating it.
❌although let’s not forget this little gem❌
Publicity seeking Lindsey Graham falsely stated that I said there is moral equivalency between the KKK, neo-Nazis & white supremacists......— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 17, 2017
I am going to go out on a limb, if your acting Chief of Staff needs to go on the Mother-Ship of Trump/State run media also known as Fox “news” and have to say the following one might think...gee I wonder why you’d need to say that🙄
“The president is not a white supremacist,” White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said on Fox News Sunday. “I’m not sure how many times we have to say that.”
I dunno Mick maybe until Trump stops pandering to that subsection of his base or for once just admit he’s vitriolic rhetoric is adding to the global discourse in a terrible way. Where Trump might not be the one pulling the trigger or lighting the match the facts are <sorry for yelling> HIS. WORDS. MATTER. And Trump has the biggest megaphone out there but he consistently refuses a full throated repudiation against Domestic White Terrorist. Oh you don’t like that label? TOO BAD.
FBI statistic 2015 & 2017
Similarly the FBI UCR 2016 Hate Crime Report, presented statistics they traced 684 anti-Jewish incidents and 307 anti-Jewish incidents. Sadly this trend only escalated...
The most recent data published by the FBI in November of 2018 (the data summarizes the 2017 statistics) Hate Crime Report, found 938 anti-Jewish incidents and 273 anti-Muslim incidents:
There were 7,106 single-bias incidents involving 8,493 victims. A percent distribution of victims by bias type shows that 59.6 percent of victims were targeted because of the offenders’ race/ethnicity/ancestry bias;
20.6 percent were targeted because of the offenders’ religious bias;
15.8 percent were victimized because of the offenders’ sexual-orientation bias;
1.9 percent were victimized because of the offenders’ disability bias
In the past three years in both qualitative and quantitative data from the FBI does in fact show an aggressive uptick in hate crimes. For example when looking at 2016 v 2017 UCR numbers showed a 17% increase in hate crimes reports.
As well as almost a 23% increase in hate crimes predicated by religious beliefs. Sadly there was a staggering 37% increase in anti-Jewish hate crimes. This is the semi-annual UCR Report (January to June 2018) the numbers haven’t been aggregated down to specify or delineate Hate Crimes but I recommend you take a look at. Also for future reference you may want to bookmark this FBI UCR Hate Crime website, it is an excellent resource and it’s filled with facts and various reports.
See the Tree of Life Synagogue’s Superseding indictment (including Hate Crimes) here. Bowers Superseding Indictment included:
- Eleven counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death;
- Eleven counts of hate crimes resulting in death;
- Two counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs involving an attempt to kill and use of a dangerous weapon and resulting in bodily injury;
- Two counts of hate crimes involving an attempt to kill;
- Eight counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs involving an attempt to kill and use of a dangerous weapon, and resulting in bodily injury to public safety officers;
- Four counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs involving use of a dangerous weapon and resulting in bodily injury to public safety officers;
- Twenty-five counts of discharge of a firearm during these crimes of violence.
See the 2018 Superseding Indictment Of Michael Hari, Joe Morris, Michael McWhorter and, Ellis Mack
- Robbing or attempting to rob Walmart stores, including but not limited to stores in Watseka, Ill., on Dec. 4, 2017, and Mt. Vernon, Ill., on or about Dec. 17, 2017;
- Robbing or attempting to rob individuals suspected of being involved in drug trafficking, including but not limited to individuals in Ambia, Ind., on or about Dec. 16, 2017;
- Damaging or attempting to damage Canadian National Railway railroad tracks located near Effingham, Ill., by an explosive device on or about Jan. 7, 2018, and then attempting to extort money from the railroad by threatening additional attempts to damage the tracks if the railroad did not pay a ransom; and,
- Planting materials that could be used to make explosives devices on the property of a person in Clarence, on or about Feb. 8, 2018, in an attempt to deflect law enforcement suspicion from the conspirators to the property owner.
See the Kroger Shooter Indictment, which charged the shooter with hate crimes for shooting and killing two victims because of their race and color; and for shooting at a third man because of his race and color.
The indictment also charges Bush for using and discharging a firearm during and in relation to those crimes of violence. The indictment alleges that Bush committed the offenses after substantial planning and premeditation, that he killed more than one person in a single criminal episode, and that he knowingly created a grave risk of death to others on the scene.
See February 20, 2019 Alan D. Covington...indictment of Hate crimes, see DOJ OPA release ...
Nov. 27, 2018, Covington entered the premises of a tire store, shouted that he wanted to “kill Mexicans,” and then struck L.G.L in the head with a metal pole. The indictment alleges that the attack against L.G.L. included an attempt to kill. According to the indictment, Covington also struck J.L. with a metal pole. Both men suffered bodily injury. The indictment further alleges that Covington swung the metal pole at A.L. in an attempt to injure A.L.
The rise in terms of the increase in frequency and concentration of Hate Crimes then Acting Attorney General Whitaker issued the following statement (this might be the only statement of Whitaker’s that I would full throated endorse):
“This report is a call to action—and we will heed that call. The Department of Justice’s top priority is to reduce violent crime in America, and hate crimes are violent crimes. They are also despicable violations of our core values as Americans. I am particularly troubled by the increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes—which were already the most common religious hate crimes in the United States—that is well documented in this report. The American people can be assured that this Department has already taken significant and aggressive actions against these crimes and that we will vigorously and effectively defend their rights."
In October of 2018 the Justice Department actually created a new website, specifically to amplify more data related to Hate Crimes. I would also bookmark that website too.
At this point it is an exercise in futility to expect that Trump will rise to the occasion and dignity the Office of the President Of The United States once had. Trump is absolutely incapable of acting how we expect our presidents to act in times of unspeakable tragedy, so stop expect he will. He never will because he can’t.
The big difference is each of us collectively can rise to the occasion, Muslims are not all had people. I for one am tired of politicians trafficking in toxic tropes that are meant to demonize a community who are Americans. They matter just as much as you and I do. And we need to start acting that way....for example did you know in the Qoran (and yes I’m fully aware of the provactive nature of this passage is) conversely you do know there are some pretty barbaric and disturbing passages in the Bible, right?
“...if any one killed a person, it would be as if he killed the whole of mankind; and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole of mankind…” - The Holy Quran (Chapter Five, Verse 32).
Do not mistreat foreigners who are living in your land. Treat them as you would an Israelite, and love them as you love yourselves. Remember that you were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God. (Leviticus 19:33-34)
Oh my tiny street in a vibrant DC suburb, I have neighbors who are Muslims, Shik, Buddhist, Jewish, Catholic, Methodist, Agnostic and you know what, we all look out for each other, our children have all grown up with each other. Over the years when one of my neighbor’s child went missing none of is cared that they are African Americans who happen to be Muslim. We cared that our neighbors were totally freaked out and they just wanted to find their child. In another instance when a neighbors house caught fire, we didn’t care that they were Methodist, we cared that their family was safe and that their whole family (including their fur babies) were accounted for.
During the 35 day Trump-shutdown, our street pooled our funds together to make sure there was food in their pantry and refrigerator and their kids had what they needed for school. Again because they are all Americans and they all have the right and freedom to practice what religion they want without fear of persecution. But most importantly they are human beings and being a decent person has become the exception versus the rule. I honestly long for the days where we attempt to treat each other with dignity and strive to embody the “golden rule”. And lastly just because you see the current president being a racist hate-monger that does not mean it’s okay or that you should emulate his behavior. Otherwise you’ll become the very thing you (and I loathe) and I refuse to give Trump that power.
“ Don’t be a xenophobic douche canoe because your kids are watching your doucheness and you’re responsible for the tiny adults you are raising. Do better than Trump” -SpicyFiles, (Book of Oh Shittlestix 2:13:666, snort)
Don’t be like Donald Trump who likely wakes up everyday plotting his revenge, you have something that Trump lacks...compassion. So my challenge to you is do one random act of kindness this week. It’s good for your soul and heart.
When confronted with hate and fear choose to show love and compassion or at the very least attempt to have the willingness to try and understand what is causing that person’s hate and fear. In the end if I’m going to chose, I will always choose helping versus hurting others.
And I’ll close this entry with one of my favorite songs of all time, (it’s actually set as my alarm M W F and has a permanent position on my treadmill play list)
