FBI active shooter

reports 2000-2017

The FBI defines an “Active Shooter/Shooting” incident as:

“Active shooter is a term used by law enforcement to describe a situation in which a shoot- ing is in progress and an aspect of the crime may affect the protocols used in responding to and reacting at the scene of the incident. Unlike a defined crime, such as a murder or mass killing, the active aspect inherently implies that both law enforcement personnel and citizens have the potential to affect the outcome of the event based upon their responses.’

In 2014 the FBI released a their first active shooter/shooting study, which examined shootings from 2000 to 2013. The FBI concluded that on average, from 2000 to 2013, per year 11.4 incidents occurred. Over this 14 year reporting period:

Casualties (victims killed and wounded) totaled 1,043. The individual shooters are not included in this total.

A total of 486 individuals were killed.

A total of 557 individuals were wounded.

The numbers are sobering. I can not emphasize enough the aforementioned numbers were over a 14 year period. These data points give you much needed historical data, see pages 6-10;

FBI data 2014-2015

As previously established in the FBI report for 2000 thru 2013 an average of 11.4 active shooter incidents occurred, annually. Moving into 2014-2015 reporting period that annual number increased to an average of 20 active shooter incidents per year. An increase of 8.6 active shooter incidents.

As expected, more shootings equals more casualties:

 “A total of 231 casualties were identified with 92 killed and 139 wounded, 9 excluding the shooters. The highest number of casualties occurred at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, with 14 killed and 22 wounded. The second highest number of casualties occurred in Isla Vista, California, with 6 killed and 14 wounded. The 20 casual- ties on Isla Vista streets resulted from 3 different modes of assault, with 3 shot and killed, 7 shot and wounded, 3 stabbed to death, and 7 struck and wounded by the shooter’s vehicle.’

With 3 separate FBI reports, you now have a universe of data that spans some 17 years. Any average person can review this data, either holistically or year over year. One can extrapolate multiple patterns, commonalities and various mitigating factors.  Conversely some will try to manipulate the data (yes NRA, I’m looking right at you), but in the end the result is the same; more guns means more deaths and the vast majority of shooters are White Males.

A person’s second amendment right, which 4 different Appellate Courts & the Supreme Court, all determined Semi-Automatic/Assault Weapons/Military-Style are NOT protected by the Second Amendment, and their right to bear arms, should not impede or supersede your right to life and liberty.

And lets be clear, the NRA’s predictable “Obama is a Muslim who’s going to take your guns”...equites to nothing but the NRA acting like a “fringe” terrorist organization. The NRA is a master of ginning up fear and anger. The NRA’s response to Sandy Hook and the dozens of other mass shootings, is exactly how a fringe terrorist organization would respond. For example  what exactly was the point of this NRA Ad?

Responsible common sense Background checks and gun safety is not unreasonable. Like millions of other Americans I’m sick of wondering, is today the day I get a call or emergency alert that my childrens school is in lock down because there’s an active shooter at my kids school. I’m tired of going to the mall or movie theater and immediately thinking, if there’s an active shooter what’s the fastest way out or a decent place to hide.

The NRA’s feigned hysteria that the Liberals & Democrats are coming for your guns, it’s vulgar & offensive.

Meaning in America’s current pro NRA, proGOP proTrump Gun culture, apparently our rights to go to a movie, a Shopping Mall, an outdoor concert, our places of Worship to pray to our God or even sending our children to school is superseded by some lunatic’s right to owning a gun. Specifically guns like the ARs, which were solely designed as a weapon on mass casualty. And I would be remiss to not disclose, that yes I worked for the NRA (notice the past tense). I am pro second amendment right, I enjoy shooting, specifically skeet shooting but I’m sick of turning on the news and seeing yet another mass shooting. Aren’t you?
